Matthew Zimmerman finishes third in 215-pound weight division

Matthew Zimmerman and James Rocco paced the Barrington High School wrestling team at the state championship wrestling tournament last weekend. 

Zimmerman, competing in the 215-pound weight division, battled to a third place finish, while Rocco locked up a fourth place finish in the 157-pound weight division.

As a team, the Eagles finished 15th, scoring a total of 49 points. 

Barrington finishers:

• 215 pounds — Matthew Zimmerman had a stellar tournament and finished third in his bracket. Zimmerman defeated Mt. Hope’s Mason Tavares in his first match but then lost to Ben Wilcox of Woonsocket. In the consolation bracket, Zimmerman was unstoppable. Zimmerman first defeated Hendricken’s Hunter Hennessey, and then defeated Scituate’s Jackson Bowden. In the consolation semifinal, Zimmerman defeated Coventry’s Dason Jones and in the consolation final, Zimmerman faced off against Wilcox for a second time. In this rematch, Zimmerman won handily and was awarded third place overall. 

• 157 pounds — The Eagles’ James Rocco had a strong tournament. Rocco defeated Hope’s Andrew Corona in his first match, and then defeated Raymond McConnell of Narragansett. Rocco dropped a match to Cumberland’s Jordan DaCosta. In the consolation bracket, Rocco defeated East Providence’s Simon Palumbo. In a rematch with McConnell, Rocco lost 5-1. Rocco was awarded fourth place in the bracket. 

• 165 pounds — Barrington’s Gianni DiGioa won his first round match against Toll Gate’s Carlos Us-Spaziano by decision 13-10. DiGioa then lost his next match to Hendricken’s Logan Ross by decision, 8-4. DiGioa then lost a consolation bracket match to Cumberland’s Samuel O’Connell, by decision 3-1.

• 144 pounds — Barrington’s Caleb Appleyard lost to Christopher Polanco of Hope High School, by decision 5-2. Appleyard won his first match in the consolation bracket over Mehki Araujo by a 11-9 decision. He then lost to Scituate’s Nolin Vangel, by decision 5-2. 

• 175 pounds — Henry McClelland lost his first match against Benjamin Johnson-McMahon by decision 11-6. In the consolation bracket, McClelland defeated Devon Cranston of Exeter/West Greenwich, and then lost to Lincoln Tiernan of Hendricken. 

• 113 pounds — Brayden Hughes won his first round match over Desanni Dias of Hope, by decision 6-4. He lost a second round match against Johnston’s Ryan Morales. Hughes then lost a consolation match to South Kingstown’s Ethan Gardner.

• 120 pounds — Aidan Mantooth won his first round match against Scituate’s Anthony Olaes, but then dropped his next match Aydin Schifino of East Providence. He lost a consolation match to LaSalle’s Raffi Rafaelian.

• 150 pounds — Barrington’s Connor Foley won his first round match over Austin McClure of Burrillville and then lost Carnell Davis of Ponaganset. Foley lost a consolation match to Smithfield’s Alex Borzell. 

• 106 pounds — Logan Medeiros lost a first round match to Robert Newton, of Scituate. He then dropped a match in the consolation bracket to Ryan Cantino of South Kingstown. 

• 190 pounds — Brandon Medeiros lost his first round match to Nasir Brotka of Central and then dropped a consolation match to North Providence’s Ebrima Sinyan.
