Carroll: Barrington must be resilient

Posted

As president of the town council, I pushed hard for the creation of our new Resilience and Energy Committee.  This group of dedicated residents are all experts in their fields who are helping us get ready for and recover from natural disasters. I’ve also asked our planner to seek a grant to hire a chief resiliency officer.

Barrington’s beauty and character are shaped by the waters that surround us. Unfortunately, those waters are rising. We know for certain that we will someday face another hurricane with devastating flooding. We just don’t know when.

We have emergency management plans in place for evacuating and protecting our citizens and critical infrastructure, but we also need to prepare for that time after the storm.

If reelected, I’ll work hard to make sure our town is prepared for the storms that will come, and that Barrington will bounce back strongly.

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
