The Barrington High School girls cross country team, paced by two freshmen runners, won the Class B Championship at Ponaganset High School on Saturday afternoon, Oct. 28.

Barrington knocked off the five-time defending Class B Champion East Greenwich, 56-65 (lowest score wins). Portsmouth High School finished in third place.

The victory marked the first class championship for Barrington since 2017.

All seven Barrington runners moved up during the race, having been in third place to both East Greenwich and Portsmouth at the one-mile mark of the 3.1 mile race. By the finish line all seven Barrington runners were ahead of the fifth place finisher for the Avengers and Patriots.

Two freshmen led the way for Barrington — Evelyn Lefort finished fifth overall and clocked her best time of the year at 20:51.22, and her classmate Maura Gravina finished 11th with a time of 21:35.55.

BHS Junior Sara Chang was 12th, just ahead of two sophomores, Mia He in 13th and Maeve Kelly at 15th. Junior Sophie Gardos (23rd) and senior captain Jane Bryant (24th) contributed by moving ahead of a number of competitors in the final kilometer.

Barrington’s top five runners all finished within 59 seconds of each other.
