Barrington Town Council advances synthetic turf field proposal

Proposal will be included on November ballot

Posted

At Monday night’s meeting, members of the Barrington Town Council voted 3-1 to place the synthetic turf fields proposal on the November ballot.

Councilor Rob Humm made the motion and Braxton Cloutier seconded it. Council President Carl Kustell, who earlier voted against the measure, voted in support of the effort on Monday night.

Kustell said he knew his fellow Councilor Kate Berard — she was absent on Monday night — wanted to see the proposal sent to the voters, and he did not want to throw a wrench in the process by stalling the effort.

Kustell said his own feelings on the issue — he opposes the full synthetic turf field and would prefer to use a hybrid turf approach — have not changed.

The proposal calls for synthetic turf fields to be constructed at Barrington Middle School.

School officials earlier signed off on sending the proposal to voters.

The Town Council has already proposed a $5 million bond that would be used to improve athletic fields. The money would be used for the synthetic turf fields, should voters approve that measure.
