BHS team wins state championship

Posted

The Barrington High School Science Olympiad team will compete at the national championship later this month.

Barrington earned a spot at nationals by winning the 2024 RI Science Olympiad State Tournament on April 13. The BHS team finished with 47 points (lowest points wins), well ahead of second place Moses Brown School, which had 126 points. Cranston West finished third with 132 points.

Nationals will be held at Michigan State University on May 23-24.

The Barrington High School team finished first in nine separate events at the state championship, including Astronomy, Chemistry Lab, Ecology, Experimental Design and Geologic Mapping. No other team in the state had more than four first place finishes.

The Barrington High School Science Olympiad team features Genevieve Geiser, Athena Gao, Michelle Xian, Vineet Abbineni, Vignesh Peddi, Rahul Yehiya, Troy Tian, Alan Weng, Neal Bansal, Will Sturla, Siddarth Gupta, David Xiong, Isabelle Chen, Ellie Dunn and Iris Yang.

Stephen Marshall and Sabrina Cancel are the BHS Science Olympiad coaches.

The team has been working hard to raise the money needed to pay for the upcoming trip to Nationals. Last weekend, team members collected donations outside the Barrington Shaw’s Supermarket.
