Eagles top Islanders in five-set thriller

The Barrington High School girls volleyball team outlasted Middletown, 3-2, in a Division II quarterfinal playoff match on Wednesday night, Nov. 1.

The victory propels the Eagles into a semifinal showdown against East Providence. That match is set for Tuesday, Nov. 7 at 5 p.m. at North Kingstown High School. 

Against Middletown on Wednesday, Barrington fell behind 0-7 in the first set. The Eagles battled back, but lost the first set 22-25. 

Barrington win the second set, 25-20, and captured the third, 33-31. But the Eagles dropped the fourth set, 21-25, forcing a fifth and deciding set. The back-and-forth final set went to the Eagles, 15-11. 

Sophian Denham played well for Barrington, finishing with 11 kills, 29 assists and seven digs, and Kasey Dillon also had a strong match. The senior had 13 kills, five aces and 12 digs.

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once.
