The Barrington High School football team defeated Woonsocket 42-14 on Saturday, Oct. 28, and enters the Division II playoffs as one of the top seeds.
The Eagles (6-0 in Division II-B) are scheduled to host Mt. Pleasant (3-3) on Friday, Nov. 3 at 6:15 p.m. in a D-II quarterfinal playoff game. The Kilties wrapped up the regular season with a 28-16 loss to undefeated Cumberland on Saturday.
Against Woonsocket, Barrington opened the game on defense, but took over possession after a quick three-and-out by the Novans.
Mitchell Ivatts opened the scoring for Barrington with an eight-yard touchdown run in the first quarter, capping a long drive.
Barrington’s defense continued to clamp down on the Woonsocket offense. On the Novans’ second offensive series, Barrington linebacker AJ DiOrio sacked the QB on second down, and then crushed the ballcarrier on a wide receiver screen on third down.
That tackle forced a fourth down punt by Woonsocket. Barrington’s Charly Potter blocked the punt and the Eagles’ Jared Lesk recovered the ball in the end zone. Barrington led 13-0 at the end of the first quarter.
In the second quarter, Woonsocket’s offense threatened to score. After two long runs, and key tackles by Ivatts, Woonsocket connected on a long pass, deep into Barrington territory.
The Novans had first and goal at the one yard line, but the Eagles’ defense made four key stops, including touchdown-saving tackles by Chucky Potter and Will DiGiacomo.
Barrington took over possession on its own one-yard line and a moment later DiOrio took an inside hand-off from QB Alex McClelland and broke through the line for a 91-yard touchdown run. Barrington converted the two-point try and led 21-0.
With time running out in the second quarter, the Eagles’ offense added its fourth touchdown. McClelland dropped back and darted a pass to Luca Marino in the back of the end zone.
The Eagles led 28-0 at halftime.
Charly Potter capped another scoring driving with a touchdown run in the third quarter, giving the Eagles a 35-0 lead.
Eventually, Woonsocket scored two touchdowns against the Eagles, but Barrington scored again in the fourth quarter when Troy Van Ness scampered into the end zone on an option play.
