A Barrington man suffered serious injuries during a bicycle accident late Thursday afternoon.

Barrington police said the 66-year-old resident was moving at a fast rate of speed on his bicycle as he traveled west on Massasoit Avenue heading toward the White Church Bridge. As he neared the intersection with Martin Avenue, an Amazon delivery van driven by a 28-year-old Providence woman began pulling out of Martin Avenue onto Massasoit Avenue.

Police said the bicyclist and delivery truck driver saw each other just prior to the collision — the van's driver, realizing her vehicle was already half-way into the intersection, tried to accelerate to get out of the cyclist's way. Meanwhile, the bicyclist tried to avoid the van. Police said the cyclist lost control of his bike and slammed into the side of the van.

Witnesses to the accident could hear a loud noise from the collision.

Immediately following the accident, nearby motorists and residents rushed to help the cyclist, who lay motionless in the middle of Massasoit Avenue. His bright orange bicycle lay nearby. A doctor who had been nearby offered assistance.

Police received multiple 911 calls at about 5:50 p.m., and within a few minutes a Barrington Fire Department engine arrived on the scene, along with multiple police officers.

Barrington Police Chief Dino DeCrescenzo responded to the scene also. He said the cyclist suffered serious head injuries, but was conscious. A Warren rescue assisted at the accident, and transported the Barrington man to a hospital.

Chief DeCrescenzo said there will be no criminal charges filed against the driver of the delivery van. He said there may not be any motor vehicle violations lodged either.

Police officers remained on the scene for more than an hour after the crash — they taped off the intersection while completing an accident reconstruction. Traffic was detoured around the intersection.

Police cleared the scene later that evening.
