The Barrington U12 All-Star baseball team will return home today, Wednesday, Aug. 21.

The local team, which won the District II, State and Regional tournaments, was eliminated from the Little League World Series after losing 2-0 to New Jersey on Tuesday night, Aug. 20. 

Barrington was in a must-win situation after splitting its first two games of the tournament — Barrington lost 3-0 to South Riding, Va. on Friday, and defeated Bowling Green, Ky., 6-1 on Saturday.

According to a Barrington Little League official, the team bus carrying Barrington's players and coaches was scheduled to leave Williamsport, Pa. at 11 a.m. on Wednesday and was expected to arrive at Sherwood Field in Barrington at about 6:15 p.m.

Residents and fans are welcome to attend the welcome-back event.

The official said the Rhode Island State Police will escort the team bus from the state line back to Sherwood Field. 

Barrington's hopes for a deeper run in the tournament came up just short on Tuesday night in front of a national ESPN audience. The Barrington and New Jersey teams remained scoreless through the first five innings of play, despite both teams having scoring opportunities throughout the game.

New Jersey used a rotation of different pitchers, while Barrington leaned on Miles Fontaine, who managed to keep a strong-hitting NJ team off-balance for most of the game. 

New Jersey took the lead in the top of the sixth inning. With runners on second and third and one out, a New Jersey batter hit a grounder to second base. Barrington's Mason Crain fielded the hard-hit ball, looked back the runner at third and tossed to first for the out. The New Jersey runner then broke for home and just beat the throw, which sailed high, allowing a second New Jersey run to score. 

Barrington continued to battle in the bottom of the sixth inning, as Mason Crain hit a single with two outs and Alex Anderson scorched a grounder down the third base line. The New Jersey fielder scooped up the ball and fired a strike to first, ending the game and Barrington's historic run through All-Stars competition.
