The Barrington 11U All-Star baseball team captured the District 2 Championship last week and was scheduled to play in the state tournament starting Monday night, July 18.

Barrington defeated Pawtucket 13-3 in the District 2 finals last week. Luchi Floriani pitched 4 and 1/3 innings, allowing three runs on five hits, while striking out seven and walking four. Floriani had an 11-pitch first inning, aided by some strong defense at second base, where Harrison Collins recorded all three outs.

Sean Caldarella closed out the game for Barrington on the mound, striking out all five batters he faced.

Mahir Salahuddin went 4-for-5 at the plate with a double, while Caldarella had three hits including two doubles. Pat Hodgkin finished with two hits, including a double.

Barrington opened the tournament with a 6-1 win over East Providence. Floriani pitched a gem for Barrington, striking out more than a dozen batters. Salahuddin and Hodgkin each had key hits and Collins scored a run.

Caldarella and Salahuddin shared pitching duties for Barrington in a 6-5 win over Bristol Warren in the second game of the tournament. Collins drove in two runs for Barrington and Floriani drove in one. Late in the game, Salahuddin struck out Bristol Warren’s top hitter to secure the victory.

State tournament

Barrington is scheduled to play against Smithfield on Monday, July 18 in the first round of the state tournament, which is being held at Cosimini Field at Slater Park in Pawtucket. The game is slated for a 7:30 p.m. start.
