The Barrington High School swim teams swept Lincoln in a regular season meet on Friday afternoon, Jan. 27, at the Bayside Family YMCA pool.
The Barrington boys team overpowered Lincoln, 54-34, led by a host of standout performances. BHS Coach Sandy Gorham was quick to praise the top-tier swimmers on the boys team.
“Our ‘star’ swimmers dominated the boys meet,” Gorham said.
“William McClelland. He’s just a superstar in every aspect of the word. He’s the Jamie Silva of swimming,” Gorham said, referring to the All-American football he coached while at East Providence High School. “He’s really, really tremendous.”
Gorham was also very impressed with Lucas Ferreira. The Barrington High School sophomore has shown marked improvement, Gorham said. Against Lincoln, Ferreira swam to a second place finish in the 500 freestyle.
“He’s one of these kids who works his tail off. He does everything right. He’s finally physically beginning to grow into,” Gorham said. “He’s done an unbelievable job in the 500 free and he’s qualified for the state swimming championship. I’m so proud of him. Everybody loves him. He does the work.”
Gorham also praised Keith Hartman, another sophomore for the Eagles. Gorham said Hartman is very versatile, and is willing to swim a number of different events in an effort to help the team.
Graham Bennett, a sophomore, has also impressed Gorham.
“He’s really coming into his own,” the coach said.
The Barrington High School girls team defeated Lincoln, 63-31. Gorham said the Eagles’ depth proved to be too much for Lincoln.
Lara Tolley swam well for the Eagles, Gorham said. The sophomore specializes in the backstroke, but she is also able to pick up important points for the team in distance events. She clocked her best time of the season in the 500 free, Gorham said.
The coach also mentioned Jillian Frechette, a sophomore member of the team. “She did a great job” in the 100 backstroke, Gorham said, adding that Frechette has worked herself out of a slump from earlier in the season.
“You’ve got to be mentally tough and keep trusting your training,” he said.
Michelle Xian also had a strong meet against Lincoln. The junior specializes in the butterfly but often helps the Eagles in other events.
“I call her my Swiss Army knife,” Gorham said.
Both Barrington teams were undefeated heading into the week — the boys team was scheduled to swim against Hendricken on Monday, while the girls will compete against Prout on Feb. 8.
