The East Providence softball team belted ten hits, while edging Pilgrim 6-5, during a Division 1 home game on Tuesday evening. The win improved the Townies record to 11-7 with just three games left before playoffs.
The Townies received stealthy pitching from senior Cassie Dulude, who struck out two and allowed seven hits, three walks and five runs in a complete game.
East Providence scored four runs in the bottom of the first inning. senior leadoff hitter Nethania Figueroa blasted a homer to lead the game off. She slugged three hits and scored a pair of runs during the game.
Welch singled and moved to third base when Marianna Pina reached on an error and stole second to put runners in scoring position. Senior Trinity Provencher, hitting in the fifth spot, slugged a double over the left fielders head and drove in both runners. Provencher promptly stole third base and home plate to give the Townies a 4-1 lead.
Pilgrim scored two more in the top of the second inning, to cut the lead to 4-3 and scored a run in the top of the fifth to knot the game 4-4.
The Townies took back the lead in the bottom of the fifth. Pina doubled and moved to third base on a bunt by Provencher. With two outs, Ava Silva smashed a single to right field to plate Pina and put the Townies up, 5-4.
East Providence scored a much needed insurance run in the bottom of the sixth inning. With two outs, Figueroa singled and stole second base. Welch slammed a clutch double to the left-centerfield gap to score Figueroa and give the Townies a 6-4 lead.
Pilgrim scratched out another run off Dulude in the top of the seventh, but the senior bore down and she and the defense got the last three outs to end the game.
