Players from seven schools unite to form East Bay Riptide

Girls ice hockey team nearly upsets top-ranked Storm

The East Bay Girls High School co-op team has re-branded as the East Bay Riptide.

The team includes players from seven area high schools — Barrington, East Providence, PCD, St. Raphael’s Academy, Mt. Hope, Tiverton, and Portsmouth.

The Riptide’s last home game was an exciting showdown against the top-ranked team in the league, the South County Storm. East Bay battled hard against the Storm, and tied with 20 seconds remaining in regulation to send the game into overtime. The Storm edged out the Riptide in a shoot-out, 3-2.

The Riptide also battled the Smithfield/Coventry/Moses Brown Co-op on Friday, Jan. 16, losing 4-2. After falling behind 3-0, the Riptide rallied as Ruby Turgeon of Barrington High School and Eleni Drosinos of Portsmouth High School each scored goals. Barrington’s Zoe Kelsey, Sonja Vaage and East Providence’s Sidney Olson each added assists on the two goals. Mt. Hope High School senior Nadia Albritton kept the game close as she saved 18 of 22 shots.

The Riptide take to the ice on Jan. 28 for their next game — a rematch against Smithfield/Coventry/Moses Brown Co-op at Brown University ice rink at 5:45 p.m.

With the loss, the East Bay Riptide fall to 2-7 on the season.
