Barrington Farm School is holding a free backyard composting workshop on Sunday, Oct. 25, from 11 a.m. to noon.
Stewart Martin, of Providence Gardenworks, will share information about how residents can compost their own food scraps.
“The workshop will give you the skills and knowledge to compost successfully by addressing: Myths of composting; Why composting is important; Locating your bin for success; Right ratio of “greens“ to “browns”; Proper mixing; and Deterring pests,” stated a press release about the event.
In Barrington, there are several options for composting food scraps. Black Earth Curbside Compost offers weekly curbside pick-up of food scraps. Barrington Farm School operates three community drop-off sites: The Barrington Farm School Stand on Federal Road, a collection site next to The Peck Center, and a collection site near the Kent Street tennis courts. There also is a compost drop-off next to the Senior Center parking lot near Wood's Pond. These community compost drop-off sites are open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, year-round, free of charge.
While the workshop is free, advance sign-up (www.barringtonfarmschool.org) is required for planning purposes.
