Public meeting soon on Hix Bridge Landing

Landing commission seeks grants for rehabilitation, improvement project

Posted

Interested in the future layout of Hix Bridge Landing? Members of the Westport Landing Commission will hold a public meeting later this month to review a plan to renovate the landing and boat ramp.

Commission members have been working for several years on a plan to improve the boat ramp, including a better and safer dock float system that will speed up launching boats, parking lot improvements and enhanced untreated stormwater management, handicapped parking and river access, and other features to make the facility more resistant to sea level rise.

To date, engineering and design fees have been paid for by state grants and the Disability Commission. As the estimated $800,000 project moves forward, Bull said the goal is to complete the improvements without any local funding source; he said the commission will seek state and federal grants and other non-Westport funding sources.

After final plan approval by the Select Board, permitting and grant application for construction will start. The public meeting will be held at 6 p.m. Wednesday, March 20, in the Town Hall Annex. Public input is important for a final plan, but Bull said those unable to attend can submit comments via e-mail to westportlandingcommission@gmail.com.

The Hix Bridge landing is one of only two public access points with deep enough water for commercial and recreational boats in the 14 square mile Westport River.A large print of the plan is posted next to the Town Clerk's office at Town Hall. A download of the plan is available here.
