Holbrook torpedoes Westport 72-68 on an emotional senior night

Coach Boudria speaks of Wildcats and son, Ben during annual poem

The Westport basketball team celebrated an emotional senior night, before falling to Holbrook 72-68 in front of a packed gymnasium at the high school on Friday night. Wildcats seniors Hunter Brodeur, Max Morotti, Ben Boudria, Owen Friedrichson, Coltrane McGonigle, Cam Leary and Nick DosVais, promenaded with family members, down a row lined with cheerleaders, to head coach Scot Boudria who gave them gifts of flowers and hugs. Senior cheerleaders Braylin Montigny and Camryn Rezendes were also honored with flowers from coach Courtney Moniz. Coach Boudria then took the microphone to recite his annual poem.

“The road we will travel begins at grade three,” he started.

“A time of happiness and love when you played basketball wild and free….Growing up in front of our eyes, now it seems like it was a dream...Trophies were won and lost.

Knees were skinned and scraped.

On to Barnstable we would go and then we decided our Championship fate…You seven were the ones that would stay together. Your heart would be true. You made my coaching experience extra-special and for that I must thank you.”

Coach Boudria spoke of Brodeur’s offensive talents, “We all know  that when your tongue comes out you will get as hot as a torch.” And of McGonigle’s team spirit, “You know what it means to care and you know the value of the word, we.”
Morotti’s rebounding and shooting prowess, “Your 3-point shot, has both a unique and wonderful style. You know Max, other people might think this, but I know you're only my miracle child.”

He talked of Leary’s hunger to win and of his shooting, “your shooting gets so hot and it seems like your defenders need sunscreen.” He mentioned Friedrichson’s 3-pointers in the only game he played before injuring his foot and of DosVais’ basket against Fairhaven that left, “fans in disbelief.”

He paused to hold back tears when he spoke of his son, Ben, “Tiny in stature but a desire and heart so incredibly large. You have made me proud as both a father and a coach, especially when you take a charge.”

“Know that you all are much more to me than players and that this is your home, here in a place that I like to call, Bestport.”

Seniors start, Holbrook finishes

Coach Boudria started five of his seven seniors against 13-3 Holbrook who had come to play after losing to the Wildcats 74-57 on Jan. 25. The emotion of the night seemed to sap the Wildcats of their intensity. Owen Burke, the Bulldogs 1000-point scorer, put up 11 points with three 3-pointers in the first quarter as they took a 19-14 lead that they never relinquished. Holbrook led 33-28 at halftime and 53-45 after three quarters. Burke finished with 15 points.

The Boudria brothers, coming off the bench, combined for 34 points. Owen scored 19 points in the last three quarters and Ben netted 15 points, sinking six of six free throws. Brodeur scored 13 points, Morotti posted 12, McGonigle recorded 6 points and Leary added 3. The loss was Westport’s third in a row and capped their worst week of the season. The Wildcats lost 68-60 at Bishop Stang on Monday and fell to West Bridgewater 61-45 on Wednesday. Westport’s record is 10-6 and 4-2 in the Mayflower Athletic Conference, with four road games left before playoffs. The Wildcats travel to Bishop Stang on Monday, Avon on Wednesday and Bishop Connolly on Friday. All games start at 6:30 p.m. They play their final game on Wednesday, Feb. 22, at East Bridgewater starting at 1:30 p.m.
