Tiverton falls to high powered Moses Brown in quarterfinals

The Tiverton girls basketball team fell to high powered Moses Brown 65-34 in the Division II quarterfinals in Providence on Tuesday night. The Tigers, who dropped to 11-11, won their initial playoff game, beating Coventry 41-31 at home last Friday night.

“We battled,” said Tiverton head coach Mike Brigham, “The seniors played fantastic in their final game. The girls played aggressive and tough til the end.”

Oliveira leads the Tigers’ with 12 points

Freshman point guard Cami Oliveira scored 12 points with a 3-pointer to lead Tiverton in the loss. She made 4 steals defensively as Tiverton put full-court pressure on the Quakers most of the game.

“Cami battled at the point all night,” Coach Brigham said. “She was exhausted.”

Junior forward Jenna Deldeo scored 9 points for Tiverton. Jah’niece Branch netted 8, Brooke Sowa sank a 3-pointer and Katie Richardson scored 2 points. Richardson, a senior also made 3 steals, defensively.

Tiverton had a difficult time stopping Quakers sophomore guard Lauren Bousquet who scored a game high 28 points. Junior Ellery Pacheco and freshman Sarah Poland drew the difficult assignment of trying to defend Bousquet.

“She’s the best player in the State,” said Coach Brigham. “But they made her earn everything she got. The majority of her points came from the foul line. The defense created multiple turnovers from her and pushed her out of the paint.”

Tigers' trio pulls down 30 rebounds

The Tigers’ trio of Deldeo, Branch and senior Laney Page played well under the basket for Tiverton. Deldeo pulled down 12 rebounds, Branch grabbed 10 boards and Page snatched 8.

The Tigers, who lost 6 of 8 games to start the season, caught fire on January 15 after beating Cranston East 48-44 and won 8 of 10 games to finish the regular season 10-9.

“They worked hard,” said Coach Brigham. “We made adjustments and had an exciting end of season run. It was special.”

No fun playing Moses Brown

Coach Brigham wasn’t a fan of having to play a parochial school in a Division II playoff game.  According to the RIIL website and the games that they have listed, 19-1 Moses Brown crushed every D-II team that they played this season by 20 points or more.  The Quakers didn't have  their loss listed, and some scores were not posted.  They beat  West Warwick 62-18 and Cranston East  67-19.  They beat the Tigers' 63-34 in January.

“They have too much fire power for a small school like us,” he said. “How Moses Brown is not in D-I, is really mind boggling to me.”
