Spirits of Island Cemetery: A living history walking tour

Island Cemetery is the final resting place of important and intriguing people, many from Newport’s Gilded Age. During this guided walking tour across the cemetery’s scenic grounds, participants will meet costumed living historians representing figures such as a civil rights leader, a Civil War nurse, an explorer, and a member of Teddy Roosevelt’s’ Rough Riders. The tour will last approximately 90 minutes and is presented by the Newport Historical Society in partnership with Island Cemetery.

Tours are Saturday, Oct. 7, at 1, 3:30 and 6 p.m.

Tickets are $30 for adults, $25 for NHS members, and $15 for children ages 5-12 and are available at NewportHistoryTours.org. This tour meets at Island Cemetery, 30 Warner Street, Newport, RI. Parking is available onsite.

Jim McGaw

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
