PORTSMOUTH — There was no scoring in the last 80-plus minutes of the Division II state girls’ soccer quarterfinals between Portsmouth High and Mt. Saint Charles Academy on Thursday night, Nov. 3
But it didn’t matter, as the Patriots scored the only goal they needed early on.
Just two minutes into the game played on the PHS turf field, sophomore Mollyana McGuire found the back of the net to make it 1-0 Patriots.
Portsmouth’s stout defense and excellent play by its goalkeeper, senior co-captain Emily Maito, didn’t allow the Mounties to score all game. Maito made a key save late in the game to seal the contest for Portsmouth.
Credit also has to go to the Mounties’ goalkeeper, Carolyn Acker, who played tough despite giving up the early goal. There was a scary moment 27 minutes into the second half, when Acker came out of goal to meet McGuire, who was rushing toward the next on a breakaway.
The two collided hard, and Acker was on the turf for at least 30 seconds before getting up. She came out of the game for a couple of minutes, but returned to finish despite being clearly hobbled.
The No. 2-seeded Patriots advance to the semifinals, where they will face the No. 11 seed, Ponaganset, on Wednesday, Nov. 9. The game starts at 7 p.m. at East Greenwich High School.
The Patriots are 10-0-3 in league play, and 11-1-5 overall.
