The East Providence High School boys' outdoor track and field team opened up its 2024 Eastern Division meet season with a sweep of visiting Providence Country Day, Tiverton and Mt. Hope Tuesday afternoon, April 9, at the Townie Athletics Complex.

The locals defeated the next-door neighbor Knights 111-23, Tiverton 122-22 and Mt. Hope 111.5-32.5.

"I was happy. Things ran efficiently. The team performed better than expected since we've only been able to practice outside a few days because of poor weather," said EPHS boys' head coach Bob Lyons. "We also have a number of team members who were experiencing their first track and field meet and came through with flying colors."

The Townies dominated in most of the track events, including Roger Beaudet's 1-2-3 sweep leading victory in the 110-meter hurdles in 20.3 seconds. Carlos Rodrigues was second in 20.9 and Tyler Conneally third in 24.3. In the 300 meter version, Beaudet was second in 48.6 to Jackson Lopes of Mt. Hope's winning time of 47.7. Rodrigues and Conneally were third and fourth, respectively.

In the speed events, Jack Pawlik gave the locals a victory in the 100 meters with a time of 11.8 seconds. Teammate Justin Jardine was second in 12 flat. EP's Julius Cortes and Tiverton's Austin Beausoleil each clocked 12.1 to share third. In the 200 and another EPHS sweep, Jardine was the winner in 23.9 with Pawlik second at 24.4 and EP's Kwamahn Gilliard third in 24.6. And in the 400, the Townies' Jaidin Ivy won in 53 flat with Jardine in a share of second at 53.7 with Mt. Hope's Gavin Stegall.

In the middle distance runs, Mt. Hope's Owen Schenck won the 800 in 2:08.2 with EP's Will Massey in second at 2:19.5 and Stegall in third at 2:26.1. The Townies' Will Anthony was fourth in 2:29.6. In the lone long distance event, PCD's Ethan Booker won in 10:16.6 with Knights' mater Jones Brody in third with a 10:34.4. EP's Anthony split the pair in second with a 10:29.3.

Rounding out the track events, Pawlik, Cortes, Gilliard and Brandyn Van Wagner won the 4x100 relay for the Townies in 46.6. Mac Prevette, Gerry Gagnon, Ivy and Jardine won the 4x4 in 3:47.6.

In the throwing events, Tiverton's Tom Cooper won the discus with a best toss of 137 feet, 11 inches. EP's Michael Precious was second with an 87'2." Precious won the hammer with a distance of 131'8," with Tiverton's Ethan Quicksall second at 115'3" and EP's Logan Xavier Logan third at 97'7." In the javelin, PCD's Ethan Baker won with a toss of 118'10" followed by Xavier in second at 88'3." Tiverton's Cooper won the shot with a 35'5.5" followed by PCD's Griffin Bordac with a 33'3.5."

In the jumps, EP's Kenaz Ochgwu won on attempts at 6'2," needing two tries to clear the bar while teammate Dylan Slavick needed a third attempt. The Townies' Cam Evora was third, dropping out at 6 even. Lucas Santa Cruz and Van Wagner went 1-2 in the long with distances of 18'3.5" and 18'.5," respectively. And Evora won the triple in 41'7" followed by Santa Cruz at 35'4.5."

One last event was the pole vault where Mt. Hope's Tyler Scarborough cleared 7'6." EP's Conneally and Beaudet did not cover the opening height of 7 even.
