Golf sweeps, boys' volleyball beats Pilgrim

Emma Boisseau's double in the bottom of the seventh inning capped a two-run rally and helped the East Providence High School softball team earn its first win of the 2024 Division I season, a 5-4 victory over visiting Cranston West Wednesday afternoon, April 24.

The Townies trailed 4-3 heading into their last at-bat, but Boisseau's two-base knock scored Audrey Bernard and Mackenzie Pimentel to give the locals their elusive initial win. EP improved to 1-7 at the time.

Boisseau also accounted for the Townies' first run in the bottom of the opening frame with another double to put East Providence up 1-0. The locals added two runs in the third on a double by Bernard.

Cranston West tied the game up in the top of the on a pair of run-scoring singles. The Falcons then took lead in the sixth with another RBI base hit..

Cassie DuLude earned the win in the circle for the Townies, allowing 11 hits, four runs, striking out four and walking two.

Boys' volleyball
The EPHS boys' volleyball team defeated Pilgrim in Warwick Wednesday night, April 24, in a Division II match by a 3-1 count of scores of 25-10, 25-21, 23-25 and 25-16.

DJ Lepine and Jordan Rodriguez led the Townies with 15 and 12 kills respectively. Antonio Varela added five kills and three blocks. The locals improved to 5-3 in the league.

Golf
The EPHS golf team improved to 4-0 on the young Eastern Division season after the Townies swept host Middletown and fellow visitor Bay View at Wanumetonomy Country Club Wednesday afternoon, April 24.

EP's four counting scores totaled 166 over the par 35 front nine of the bay-side layout. The home Islanders shot 203 and the Bengals 236. Billy Fitzgerald and Noah Araujo paced the locals as each shot a 40. Zach Mendo and Nathan Carter shot 43s.

"It was a beautiful day and the kids played well again," said EPHS head coach Bill McEnery after the Townies followed up their 161 total and sweep of Tiverton and Portsmouth the day prior at Montaup CC.

Boys' tennis
The EPHS boys' tennis team won each of its three Division II outings last week, including a come-from-behind victory Middletown to conclude a match earlier in the season halted by darkness.

The Townies trailed the host Islanders 2-3 when the contest was ended on April 9. Last week upon a return trip to Aquidneck Island, EP's second and third doubles teams went the three set distance to earn the deciding points. At 2, Justin Petion and Joe Kramer were winners 7-6, 6-7 and 6-0 while at 3 Jaydon Massa and Steel Martin won 7-5, 4-6 and 7-5.

To open their regularly scheduled matches, the Townies shut out host Westerly 5-0 on April 23. James McShane, John Vaughan, Jaydon Amaral and Brayden Rouette, in his season debut returning from injury, were straight set winners at 1-4 singles, respectively. Jordan O'Hara and Nathan Thurber were 0-and-0 winners at first dubs for the fifth point.

EP closed last week with a 6-1 on the road against Prout in Narragansett on April 25. McShane (1-and-0) and Rouette (4-and-4) won in straights at singles. Vaughan (6-3) needed three sets to win at No. 2. Amaral lost his outing at three, 3-6 in the third.

O'Hara and Thurber went the distance at first doubles, winning 6-2 in the third. Petion and Kramer were 2-and-4 winners while Massa and Martin also needed three sets, 6-2 in the third, to earn their win.

The Townies improved to 6-1 at the time in the league standings.
