EAST PROVIDENCE — Nearly all of the East Providence High School fall sports squads will be in action this weekend as the Townies prep for the start of their upcoming 2023 regular season schedules.

The football and boys' soccer teams take part in their respective Injury Fund games on Friday, Sept. 1.

The EPHS gridiron group travels to Pawtucket's Max Read Field where it faces Central Falls in the event opener at 4:45 p.m. when, among other likely performances of consequence, sophomore Jacob Duarte will make his debut as the Townies' quarterback.

Around the same time, the Townies take to the Barrington High pitch for its first formal outing under new boys' soccer coach Tim Calouro, starting at 5 p.m.

Later that evening, the EPHS girls' volleyball club plays host to Scituate in a non-league affair at 6:30 p.m.

The next morning, Saturday, Sept. 2, the respective EPHS girls' and boys' cross country teams travel to Deerfield Park in Smithfield for their Injury Fund meets. The races begin at 9 a.m.

Action for the Townies wraps up with the girls' soccer squad heading to Exeter-West Greenwich for its Injury Fund outing Saturday at 11 a.m.

Another of the EPHS fall entries, girls' tennis, isn't scheduled for play, but that doesn't mean the Townies aren't in full prep for the start of their 2023 campaign.

The Division III runner-up a year ago, East Providence's ladder matches used to determine its early-season playing order are well underway. Head coach Slade Sharma said he expects to have his opening day lineup completed sometime next week in the lead up the Townies' league opener September 11 in Johnston.

The EPHS Unified Volleyball League rounds out the fall sports contingent. The Townies spend most of next month getting for the start of their 2023 season on September 20 at home against Barrington.
