EAST PROVIDENCE — Four East Providence High School spring sports teams began up their 2023 seasons over the last week, including three who earned league victories in their initial outings of the year.

Girls' lacrosse
The reigning Division III champ EPHS girls' lacrosse team scored twice over the final few minutes to break a deadlock with neighboring Bay View en route to a 9-7 victory over the visiting Bengals in the 2023 league opener for both sides played at Townie Stadium.

Ryleigh Grant potted her hat-trick goal, her third of the afternoon, to put East Providence on top late in the second half. Kloey Iacavone added an insurance tally before the final whistle, her lone goal of the game.

Kenna Wigginton also had a hat-trick for the Townies while Emma Nordquist scored twice. Ava Williams was the winning goalie, making six saves.

Softball
The Townies were 3-0 winners over Chariho in their Division I softball opener. Senior and returning starter Keira Quadros pitched a complete game shutout, with 11 strikeouts and just one walk.

EPHS got on the board in the top of the second. Senior and returning starter Emma Bergeron reached on a double then scored on a hard hit triple by sophomore Emma Boisseau.

The Townies tacked on another run in the third. Josley Sosa started the rally with a one-out single, went to second on a sacrifice bunt by Ava Mendence and scored on a throwing error by the Chargers after the ball was put in play by Mackenzie Pimentel.

East Providence added an insurance tally in the sixth. Quadros started the inning with a walk then went all the way to third on a single by Boisseau. Sylvie Patterson followed with a suicide squeeze bunt to plate Quadros.

Boys' volleyball
The EPHS boys' volleyball team rallied to defeat the visiting Mount St. Charles/North Smithfield squad, 3-2, in the Townies' non-league season starter.

East Providence won by the scores of 19-25, 25-23, 26-28, 25-23 and 15-11 in the fifth and deciding game. DJ Lepine paced the Townies with 10 kills, 20 assists and three service aces.

Boys' tennis
The EPHS boys' tennis team debuted back in the Division II ranks with an impressive 4-3 win over visiting Cranston West at the Townie Tennis Center.

The new No. 3 doubles tandem  of Justin Petion-Jaydon Massa for East Providence, winners of the Division III championship last spring, closed out the victory with an easy 6-0, 6-0 victory.

Miguel Flores accounted for the Townies' only singles point with a 2-and-2 win from the fourth position. John Vaughan and Jordan O’Hara, a new duo this spring, and Jaydon Amaral and Nathan Thurber, East Providence's superb returning tandem, were also winners with ease by the scores of 0-and-1 and love-and-love, respectively.

The top of the Townies' singles order, Nos. 1-3 James McShane, Abigail Ellison and Brayden Rouette played competitive outings, though lost by the scores of 3-6, 3-6; 1-6, 3-6; and 6-2, 5-7, 5-7.
