Warren police: Man brandishes machete during altercation

Monday, Feb. 1
Brian L. Ferreira, 38, of Riverside, was arrested on a 24-hour domestic warrant.

A possible fire called in from Detroit Avenue just before noon turned out to be a false alarm. A down draft in the chimney filled the house with smoke.

Charles F. Palardy, 42, of 338 Child St., Apt. 3, was arrested on several Rhode Island Superior Court warrants after police pulled him over on Child Street at 4:14 p.m. He was transported to the ACI. Police said the warrants were for failure to appear for sentencing on a felony larceny (three warrants), sentencing on a forgery and counterfeiting case (one warrant), sentencing on a breaking and entering case (one warrant), sentencing for a possession of a controlled substance case (one warrant), and one for sentencing for a felony domestic charge, third offense (one warrant).

A caller from Central Avenue called police after spotting a dark SUV parked outside her home for an extended period of time, with the driver inside. Police came out and spoke to him; he was dropping off a friend.

Another call came in from Central Avenue. A woman complained that a man was harassing her and her family. Police advised her on how to get a restraining order.

A Main Street man complained about a neighbor's snow shoveling habits.

After police were asked to check on his well-being, rescue crews transported an intoxicated Sowamsett Avenue man to the hospital for detox.

A caller complained to police after receiving harassing phone calls.

Tuesday, Feb. 2
An officer was flagged down by a man who reported an incident involving the driver of a dark pickup truck on Main Street. Police sent out a BOLO and then tried to speak to the complainant; they noted he had retreated into his apartment and refused to open the door for them.

Ashley K. Lombardo, 37, of 19 Liberty St., Apt. 2, was charged with violating a no contact order, first offense.

A Barden Lane man complained that a neighbor was shoveling snow into the road and his driveway. A similar call came in from Croade Street a few minutes later.

Wednesday, Feb. 3
A Barden Lane resident called police after spotting a sick/injured skunk.

A Vernon Street resident complained that kids next door were being too loud and horsing around.

Thursday, Feb. 4
A Union Street man complained that his neighbor across the street keeps knocking on his door and harassing him.

A Croade Street man told police that his dog was attacked by two others.

Gilbert F. Rene, 31, of 39 Sowamsett Ave., Apt. 1, was charged with domestic violence/vandalism, first offense, and domestic violence/disorderly conduct, second offense , after a caller from Sowamsett requested police help in removing an unwanted person from the home.

A Lyndon Street woman called police after several juveniles banged on her door and ran off.

Friday, Feb. 5
A caller told police that there was a car driving around Cutler and Joyce streets with several people chasing behind it on foot.

Police received a call about a helium tank in the middle of Schoolhouse Road. No word on whether the caller had a super high-pitched squeaky voice.

A staff member at a Warren nursing home asked to speak with an officer about threats that had been made over the telephone.
The 911 operator received an automatic message from an iPhone watch, which indicated a man down. The watch was GPS-pinged to the East Bay Bike Path, at Locust Terrace. There, rescue crews found a man down and began administering CPR while they prepared to transport him to the hospital. Though he was taken to the hospital, sadly the man did not survive, the Warren fire chief later said. He said however that the system worked and was able to give rescuers a precise location for the victim.

A disgruntled, intoxicated man walked into police headquarters just after 4 p.m. Police called rescue crews to evaluate him, and alerted his girlfriend. She arrived about half an hour later and took him home.

Steven S. Sacco, 54, of Providence, was charged with forgery/counterfeiting.

Saturday, Feb. 6
Kevin M. Mendes, 33, of 22 Birchswamp Road, is facing multiple charges after police received reports that an occupied vehicle blocked a Birchswamp Road woman's driveway and refused to leave. Police said that as officers investigated, Mr. Mendes attempted to assault an officer with a machete. The officer was not injured. Mr. Mendes was charged with assault with a dangerous weapon in a house or dwelling, assault on a police officer, simple assault and/or battery, resisting arrest, and with two counts of disorderly conduct.

A caller to Warren's Tip411 line reported a possible domestic disturbance after hearing loud crashing, yelling and music in a nearby home. Police went to the address; the occupant had the TV turned up.

Sunday, Feb. 7
Michael Anthony Peno, 28, of Cranston, was arrested on a Rhode Island Superior Court warrant after a caller from Coomer Avenue asked that police remove his friend from the home.

Police got a tip about a possible domestic situation at a Harris Avenue home.
