Warren PD wellness check ends with use of a taser and two officers injured

An incident on Main Street that occurred on Friday, March 17 resulted in two arrests and injuries to two members of the Warren Police Department, according to an arrest report provided by Warren PD.

During the late evening hours on March 17, the report indicated that an officer observed a disabled motor vehicle on the sidewalk Main Street, in front of St. Alexander’s Church.

“Upon the officer stopping and checking on the well being of the occupants, one of the male occupants was identified as Justin Almeida [26, of Barrington], who was observed to be extremely intoxicated,” the report reads. “While officers were attempting to investigate the situation, Almeida exited the vehicle and confronted both officers in an aggressive manner.”

The report alleges that Almeida refused to listen to commands from the officers on scene, who proceeded to attempt to take him into custody.

“Mr. Almeida then began physically fighting with both officers and during the altercation, Mr. Almeida assaulted both officers resulting in injuries to the officers,” the report continued. “Due to the extreme combativeness of Mr. Almeida, one officer deployed his department issued taser which then allowed Mr. Almeida to be taken into custody as additional Warren Police and Barrington Police officers arrived on scene.”

Justin Almeida was charged with two counts of assaulting a police officer, one count of resisting arrest, and one count of disorderly conduct.

“During the same incident, Brenda Almeida [56, also of Barrington], Justin Almeida’s mother, who was also in the vehicle at the time, interfered with officers on scene as officers were attempting to take her son into custody,” the report continued. “[S]he was also charged with Disorderly Conduct and Obstruction of an Officer.”

The report indicates that one officer needed to be transported to the hospital for treatment of their injuries, while the second officer was examined on-scene by Warren Rescue personnel.

Lt. Christopher Perreault added on Monday afternoon that one of the officers has returned to his duties, while the other should be back on duty later this week.
