The Division II-playoff Mt. Hope High School boys' soccer club closed last week by playing visiting and first-place Smithfield to a nil-nil draw Thursday, Oct. 16, at Roger Williams University in Bristol.
It was the third scoreless tie for the Huskies this season. Cole Tavares made three saves and Andrew Vieira seven in net for the locals.
The Huskies saw their record move to 5-3-6 at the time and allowed them to move into fourth place in the league power rankings as they head towards the final week of the regular season. It was the first draw to date for the Sentinels, who sat atop the D-II standings with a 12-2-1 mark.
MHHS head coach Tucker Shepard noted the Huskies are just about fully healthy as they ready for the league playoffs, adding he was pleased the team's performance this past week and more recently in general.
"We had our best week playing-wise and the boys listened to what the game plan was and executed everything great," Shepard said. "We're playing the right way at the right time of the season. The boys know the goal and the expectation at this point in the season."
Girls' soccer
The MHHS girls' soccer squad played on the road against Prout Saturday, Oct. 17, returning home with a 1-1 result. Kendra Ascoli accounted for the Huskies' goal, assisted by Maya Goglia. Moira Ware stopped nine of the eight shots she faced in goal.
