State traffic officials are considering whether to add a “no right turn on red” sign at the intersection of Market and Main streets in downtown Warren.

Rep. Jan Malik recently asked DOT officials to look into the possible change; he got involved after being contacted by Deputy Warren Police Chief Joseph Loiselle, who in turn had been in touch with Sen. Walter Felag about the issue.

“It was pointed out by a few people to Sen. Felag, and he contacted me,” Deputy Chief Loiselle said. “We contacted Jan (Malik) and he went from there.”

The issue is being considered because of the pedestrian crosswalk that lies just north of the intersection.

“If people make that turn (onto Main Street) quickly, there could possibly be someone crossing that walk there that they may not see. It’s a safety thing.”

Rep. Malik said DOT officials are turning to the State Traffic Commission to make a decision on whether to install the sign. It shouldn’t be a long process, he said.

“We’re in the early stages of this. The state is going to come down and take a look, and they’ll make their decision. What we’re asking for there, I don’t think is too much.”

Rep. Malik said the state will likely return a decision within a month or two.
