Man charged with heroin possession

A Warren man who police allege had nearly an ounce of heroin in his possession was being held without bail at the ACI late last week, and faces a pre-trial hearing next February. Bristol police had been holding Roy McMahan, 51, of 32 Hope St., for narcotics violations in that town, and alerted Warren authorities that he was storing narcotics in a self-storage unit he rented on Seymour Street. After Mr. McMahan consented to a search of his storage unit, officers searched it on Wednesday, Nov. 30, allegedly finding close to an ounce of a substance that tested field positive for heroin. Mr. McMahan was charged with possession of heroin with intent to deliver and appeared before Bail Commissioner John Rego later that day.

Bristol Police arrested Mr. McMahan after a months-long investigation of heroin sales in that town. Police learned that Mr. McMahan was involved, so undercover officers put him under surveillance, according to Bristol Police Capt. Brian Burke. They followed him to Narrows Point in Bristol Nov. 30, where they allegedly watched him hand suspected heroin to another man, James T. Dunlop, 58, of 3663 Pawtucket Ave., East Providence. Officers searched both men, finding two small baggies in Mr. Dunlop’s possession, and nine baggies in Mr. McMahan’s car, Capt. Burke said. Mr. McMahan then told officers of the Warren storage unit, prompting the search there. Mr. McMahan was charged with delivery, and Mr. Dunlop was charged with possession, both felonies.

Mr. McMahan was ordered held without bail, and later appeared in Sixth Division District Court on Thursday, Dec. 1, where bail was set at $1,000 with surety. A pre-trial conference has been scheduled for Wednesday, Feb. 22, 2017.
