The Mt. Hope girls soccer team fell to Cumberland 3-1 in the Division I Championship at Rhode Island College on Saturday morning. Sara Nencka scored the Huskies lone goal assisted by Hannah Rezendes. The Mt. Hope defense played well in front of junior goalkeeper Emily Moran who made 10 saves.
“It wasn't our best performance of the season,” said head coach Kerri Giarrusso. “The girls battled until the end. To do what we did this season is absolutely amazing. I am so proud of the girls. It's not easy playing in D-1, let alone making it to the championship game.”
Mt. Hope (10-6-4) shutout South Kingstown 4-0 in the quarterfinals and beat Chariho 1-0 in the semis before falling to Cumberland. Last season the Huskies fell to LaSalle 2-0 in the quarterfinals.
Coach Giarrusso heralded her captains for their leadership this season.
“Hannah and Caitlyn both had an incredible season,” she said. “It all starts with their leadership. Caitlyn was second on the team in stats with 8 goals and 7 assists. Hannah's championship performance inspired many young girls watching that game. Hannah left everything she had on that field that day. They will certainly be missed next fall.”
Though the Huskies will lose eight seniors, they will field a talented team next season as their best goal scorers and goalkeeper will be back.
Sophomore striker Thea Jackson scored 19 goals and tallied 2 assists this season. She scored three goals against South Kingstown in the quarterfinals. Nenka, a freshman forward netted 8 goals and 6 assists. She scored the lone goal in the semifinals win over Chariho. Moran, a junior, made 172 saves during the regular season and playoffs. She also recorded 3 shutouts.
