East Providence starts search for new DPW director

Departure of Coutu to BCWA creates opening

EAST PROVIDENCE — The City of East Providence formerly announced it is seeking a new director of public works following the recent announcement by the Bristol County Water Authority it had hired away Steve Coutu for the role of that body’s Executive Director and Chief Engineer.

Mr. Coutu, who takes the BCWA position following the retirement of Pam Marchand, is expected to begin his new duties in mid-January. His departure time from East Providence is to be determined, though he said he hopes to stay on through the transition.

Mr. Coutu has lead the EPDPW since March 2001. He previously spent four years as engineer/deputy director of the department where he oversaw the daily management of its operations, supervised and inspected work performed by contractors and engineers and reviewed all subdivisions and development projects for conformance.

“We thank Mr. Coutu for his years of service to the City of East Providence and years of dedication to the residents of East Providence,” Mayor Bob DaSilva said. “It will be difficult to find someone of Steve’s caliber, but we will be diligently seeking someone as qualified as he to continue the department’s progress.

“We wish him well on his new endeavor,” the mayor added.
