The race for the House of Representatives District 68 seat is down to five hopefuls, after three candidates in Warren and two in Bristol filed nomination papers with their respective boards of canvassers by the deadline Tuesday.
In Warren, candidates on the ballot include Democrat June Speakman, Libertarian William “Billy” Hunt and Independent James McCanna. In Bristol, Independent Kenneth Marshall, who currently holds the seat, and Democrat Richard Ruggiero, will run. Warren Independent candidate John Hanley failed to submit nomination papers by Tuesday’s deadline.
Bristol and Warren will hold a Democratic primary election between Ms. Speakman and Mr. Ruggiero on Tuesday, Feb. 5. Both towns will have one polling station open for the primary: In Bristol, the Quinta Gamelin Community Center will be used and in Warren, Kickemuit Village will be open. Voters in Warren would normally vote at St. Mary of the Bay Church, but as it is under renovation officials sought a different venue. All Warren voters in District 68 will receive mailed notices from the town informing them of the new location.
The primary and March 5 special election became necessary after former Representative-elect Laufton Ascencao declined his seat in December. His departure came after it was learned that he had falsified documents and campaign literature, and lied to members of the Warren Democratic Town Committee.
