Pop star a no-show at 35-0 loss at home Friday, despite coach’s invite

There were plenty of Tiverton supporters in the stands when the Tigers fell at home 35-0 to Exeter West Greenwich Friday night, but Taylor Swift wasn’t among them.

Speculation in town was that some way, some how, the pop star would make an appearance at the game, after assistant coach and offensive coordinator Kenyon Thayer wrote an open letter inviting her to take the drive up from her Westerly mansion to Stadium Field. And though the letter got plenty of press, and Kenyon set out ticket money for the star so she wouldn’t have to pay for her seats beforehand, she was nowhere to be found.

Swift’s next chance to see the Tigers at home is Friday, Oct. 27, when they host North Providence.

Taylor, are you listening?

In the open letter to Swift published online a few days before the game, Thayer wrote that it’s about time the pop star, currently rumored to be dating Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, makes a stop in Tiverton.

After all, she has a home only about an hour away, Kenyon wrote. And she’ll get a lot out of it, he added — not the least of which, a team with tight players and a lot of heart.

“It is my understanding that you love people with lots of heart and that show love for each other," the coach wrote. "That is exactly the best way to describe the Tiverton High School football team, lots of heart and love for one another and the community that supports them."

The Tigers, now at 3-2 on the year, had plenty of heart but not much else in the tank. Though the defense and special teams played well in the first half, keeping EWG to a single touchdown and blocking an extra point, Exeter West Greenwich turned on the heat in the second, putting up 29 unanswered points to hand the Tigers their second loss on the season.

It remains to be seen if Swift will make an appearance later this season. But if she does, Thayer promised, she’ll get the VIP treatment she’s come to expect at Chiefs games.

"The bleachers are very nice with excellent views of the entire sideline and football field, at a much more affordable ticket fee," he wrote. "In case the ticket price is of concern, I will leave an envelope with money to cover your ticket, and enough for three members of your squad. If you bring additional friends, I am happy to cover their admission as well, just let the gate keeper know that I will pay them after the game.
