Tiverton Police: Power plant scare, relentless scammers

Monday, Feb. 22

A 911 caller on Main Road reported unemployment fraud at 2:56 pm.

A Bourne Mill Apartments resident called police at 3:22 pm to report a neighbor bullying her daughter.

A Pocasset Street resident called about unemployment fraud from out of state.

A State Avenue resident called 911 to report a naked person outside at 7:49 pm. Police determined that there is no issue.

A Stafford Road resident called at 8:43 pm to file a noise complaint.

Multiple noise complaints were phoned in at around 8:44 pm about a loud noise coming from the direction of the Tiverton Power Plant. The Fire Department was alerted to a report of a possible fire at the power plant but emergency responders discovered an “issue with a boiler” that staff is dealing with.

At 9:53 pm, police were called to the Teaberry Drive area for a man with hunting dogs in the area.

Tuesday, Feb. 23

A mailbox was damaged on Crandall Road by a red truck which took off at 7:59 am. 

A Bulgarmarsh Road resident called with an unemployment fraud complaint.

Police notified the state DPW that they have placed cones around Fish Road potholes and request that the holes be repaired as soon as possible.

Police caught up with a Dollar General tractor trailer truck that allegedly struck a guard rail on Canning Boulevard and kept going.

Wednesday, Feb. 24

A caller voiced concern for occupants of a house where newspapers are piling up. Neighbors said the residents are in the hospital, Covid-related.

Matthew Brian Japikse, 27, of Fall River, was arrested on charges of driving under the influence of liquor, refusing a chemical test, and driving with a suspended license. He was stopped on Route 24 north at 2:13 am.

A Crandall resident was given a verbal warning about a loose dog at 8:36 am.

Police went to Pelletier Lane at 10:10 am to check on a possum.

A vehicle struck a utility pole on Fish Road at Bulgarmarsh Road at 11:01 am. There were no injuries but National Grid was contacted to make pole repairs.

There were no injuries in a two-car accident on Lake Road at 11:19 am.

Several callers reported an erratic vehicle with a young child passenger inside on Main Road at 5:16 am. An officer found that the driver was using a cell phone to find directions.

Police went to the Tiverton Casino to check on two dogs that had been left in a car inside the parking garage for an hour. 

A 911 caller reported hay bales in the roadway of Route 24 South. An officer removed the bales.

Thursday, Feb. 25

A Bridle Way resident reported unemployment fraud.

Shaylene R. Spinner, 30, of New Bedford, was arrested on a narcotics possession charge at 1:47 am in the area of 38 Main Road.

Daysha M. Gracia, 19, of New Bedford, was arrested on two counts of narcotics possession, one charge of possession of marijuana, 18 years or older, and a charge of transporting alcoholic beverages by an underage person at 1:47 am in the area of 38 Main Road.

A two-car accident at 9:44 am on Bridle Way caused no injuries.

A Nicholson Place resident came to the station to report a hit and run accident that damaged a parked vehicle

A resident called to notify police that his elderly neighbor is being threatened by scammers.

A caller told police at 3:02 pm that a man was sleeping by the side of Main Road by a stone wall.

Callers reported that a vehicle on Bulgarmarsh Road struck a small brown dog at 4:10 pm and kept going. No word on the condition of the dog.

A deer was struck and killed on Route 24 at 11:47 pm

Friday, Feb. 26

At 8:20 am, a caller alerted police to loose cows near Weetamoo Woods.

Brett J. Tarter, 36, of 164 Lawrence Court, Tiverton, was arrested on charges of domestic assault on a person over age 60 causing bodily injury, domestic vandalism and domestic disorderly conduct at 9:11 pm at the Cumberland Farms, 1860 Main Road.

A Fish Road caller told police that a tire fell out of a trailer being towed by a white pickup truck and struck a car parked in the park-and-ride. The truck continued down Souza Road.

A 911 caller told police at 4:22 pm that a driver tried to run her off Fish Road, tailgated her and then passed her and yelled at her. Police could not locate the maroon Ford Focus.
