Tiverton Police: On thin ice, school bus mishap

Monday, Jan. 25

Carmen J. Braxton, 19, of 700 Windwood Drive, Tiverton, was cited for driving with a suspended license, third offense, at 5:46 pm on Stafford Road.

Jose F. Montanez-Talavera, 20, of Fall River, was cited for driving with a suspended license, second offense, and on a warrant from 2nd District Court at 5:58 pm on Main Road.

Police were called to Captain’s Circle at 7:39 pm for an ongoing loose dogs issue.

People screaming at each other were reported on Merritt Avenue at 9:17 pm.

Tuesday, Jan. 26

Police went to Applecreek Apartments, Windwood Drive, for a noise complaint at 1:02 am.

Police responded to a 1:32 am alarm sounding at Dollar General, Stafford Road. No intruder was found — several balloons moving around near the register may have set it off.

School officials called at 2:34 pm to report that a teacher had overheard a parent threatening to punch her child in the face during a distance learning class. 

Police and rescue went to Route 24 South at the Main Road exit for a 911 call about a rollover accident at 3:53 pm. The car was towed; no injuries were reported.

A vehicle doing donuts in the school lot was reported in the Shove Street area at 4:44 pm.

Wednesday, Jan. 27

At 4:02 pm, a Tiverton school bus with nine students on board was involved in an accident with a car. Nobody was hurt and the bus returned to Ranger School with the students.

Michael A. McCarthy III, 32, of Fall River was arrested on two counts of narcotics possession at 5:33 pm on Hooper Street.

At 10:37 pm, a Foote Street resident called to report that someone dumped six tires and a computer monitor by his property line.

Thursday, Jan, 28

At 12:02 pm, a caller reported hunters in the marsh area off Seapowet Avenue.

A caller reported that several people in a van are going door-to-door stating that they are homeless and asking to shovel and do chores.

Steven Brian Bigelow, 31, of 290 Judson St., Tiverton, was arrested on a Superior Court bench warrant on Main Road near the Fall River line.

Dawn M. Nunes, 50, of 10 Fish Road, Tiverton, was cited for driving with a suspended license, second offense, at 8:30 pm on Hooper Street.

Friday, Jan. 29

A Michael’s Lane resident called about a coyote in the back yard at 8:17 am.

A delivery truck knocked down wires on Furey Avenue at 9:09 am.

Penny J. Jardin, 49, of 109 Fairfield Ave., Tiverton, was arrested on charges of domestic simple assault and domestic disorderly conduct at 4:39 pm on Main Road.

Amanda Lee Valcarcel Aponte, 39, of Fall River, was arrested on a bench warrant from 2nd Division District Court and on a charge of driving with a suspended license, second offense, at 5:15 pm on Main Road at the Fall River line.

Derrick G. Vertentes, 32, of New Bedford, was arrested on two counts of narcotics possession at 7:06 pm at the Tiverton Casino.

Mary Ann D. Silva, 55, of 225 Brayton Road, Tiverton, was arrested on a charge of domestic simple assault at 6:14 pm at that address.

Police and rescue responded to Fish Road in the parking lot of Elaine’s Store for a 911 report of an accident at 7:16 pm. One person was transported to Newport Hospital.

Saturday, Jan. 30

Police were called to accidents involving deer on Neck Road and Bulgarmarsh Road (both deer were killed).

Youngsters out on the Cook Pond ice (by the Tiverton Fall River line) were reported at 11:31 am.

A caller reported youths out on the ice at Cook Pond at 12:26 pm.

At 2:01 pm, a caller reported a father and child out on the ice at the Trout Pond off Fish Road.

Large amounts of ice were reported on Oakland Street — the DPW brought sand and salt.

A Warren Avenue resident called about a flooded basement at 7:17 pm.

Sunday, Jan. 31

A Haskins Avenue family was forced out into the cold by a carbon monoxide alarm at 2:19 am.. A check of the alarm revealed that it was faulty.

Teens were reported to be skating on Watuppa Pond at 12:21 pm.

A skater on Cook Pond was reported at 1:49 pm

Skaters on the pond were reported near Black Goose Cafe at 2:05 pm.

Monday, Feb. 1

A Stoney Hollow Road resident reported identity theft at 8:12 am.

Parking ban violations — plow can’t get through — were reported on Clement Street at 10:19 am.

A caller on Industrial Way reported the theft of an envelope containing a large amount of cash.

A Judson Street resident reported that a black tool container was lost or stolen.

A state plow driver flagged down an officer at 4:44 pm to report that people near the north end of Main Road were shoveling snow into the roadway.
