Tiverton police arrest fugitive after car stop

A Fall River man wanted out of Louisiana was arrested Friday after a Tiverton police officer saw him driving the wrong way on Canonicus Street.

Officer Christian Måartin was on patrol when he saw a car driven by Christian Baez, 21, of Fall River, driving east on a portion of Canonicus designated for westbound traffic only. After pulling him over and checking his records, Officer Martin learned that Baez had a nationwide extradition warrant out against him from Louisiana, charging him with a probation violation related to an aggravated assault incident.

In 2021, Baez had been charged by the Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Office with four counts of attempted second-degree murder for discharging a firearm into a vehicle occupied by his ex-girlfriend, two other individuals, and an infant. He was later convicted of aggravated assault with a firearm, but reportedly left Louisiana weeks earlier and moved to Massachusetts.

After conferring with law enforcement officials in Louisiana, Baez was arrested as a fugitive from justice. He was also charged locally with driving with a suspended license and a road lanes violation.

Baez was ordered held without bail and transferred to the Rhode Island Department of Corrections in Cranston, pending his appearance before the Newport Second District Court on Monday.
