Coach pens open letter to pop star, inviting her to game Friday

Will Taylor Swift really attend Friday night’s Tiverton Tigers football game? One of the team’s coaches is pulling for her to make an appearance.

In an open letter to Swift published online earlier this week, assistant coach Kenyon Thayer said it’s about time the pop star, currently rumored to be dating Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, makes a stop in Tiverton.

After all, she has a home in Westerly and it’s not that far of a drive, Kenyon wrote. And she’ll get a lot out of it, he added — not the least of which, a team with tight players and a lot of heart.

“It is my understanding that you love people with lots of heart and that show love for each other," the coach wrote. "That is exactly the best way to describe the Tiverton High School football team, lots of heart and love for one another and the community that supports them."

The Tigers are 3-1 on the season, and they'll square off against xx at 7 p.m. against the Exeter/West Greenwich Prout co-op. While the home stadium might not be as cozy as the luxury boxes Swift has been used to over the past few Sundays, they're comforting and inviting in their own way, Kenyon wrote. And they're much less expensive.

"The bleachers are very nice with excellent views of the entire sideline and football field, at a much more affordable ticket fee," he wrote. "In case the ticket price is of concern, I will leave an envelope with money to cover your ticket, and enough for three members of your squad. If you bring additional friends, I am happy to cover their admission as well, just let the gate keeper know that I will pay them after the game.

An Open Letter  to Taylor Swift, football’s newest big fan: Taylor Swift

Ms. Swift, I hope this letter finds you and finds you well. I could not help but see you on television the last few weeks attending NFL football games. Now that I know you are a big football fan, I hope you will accept this invitation to a football game in one of your home states, Rhode Island, at the Tiverton High School. Our next home game is Friday, October 6th at 7pm.

It is my understanding that you love people with lots of heart and that show love for each other. That is exactly the best way to describe the Tiverton High School football team, lots of heart and love for one another and the community that supports them. The team is 3-1 this season, with the three victories an example of a full team effort with extreme perseverance – aka “heart.”

I also understand you appreciate the Tight End position and players. Our team has a specific emphasis on the Tight Ends. However, our early season success is the product of a total team effort: offense, defense and special teams. If you are able to attend our game, I am sure you will be delighted with our Tight End play, just like you have been watching on the Kansas City team.

I know that you also enjoy touring the United States. Your trip from Westerly, RI to Tiverton, RI will allow you to quickly tour through three of the New England states. If you are unfamiliar with Tiverton, it is uniquely located such that it doesn’t border any other part of Rhode Island, it is surrounded by the state of Massachusetts. From your Rhode Island home, you may need to briefly travel into Connecticut, back to RI, through a portion of MA, then back into RI. A very nice and easy three state tour, just like you enjoy.

Unfortunately, our home stadium doesn’t have any glass enclosed boxes. The bleachers are very nice with excellent views of the entire sideline and football field, at a much more affordable ticket fee. In case the ticket price is of concern, I will leave an envelope with money to cover your ticket, and enough for three members of your squad. If you bring additional friends, I am happy to cover their admission as well, just let the gate keeper know that I will pay them after the game.

I hope you accept this invitation, and we see you on Friday cheering for the Tiverton Tigers

Sincerely, Koach Kenyon Thayer
