The state resumes its Providence-Newport bay ferry starting Friday, a service that is scheduled to continue through Sept. 5. A ferry ran that route for a number of years but was discontinued.
The state Department of Transportation has contracted with the New Jersey-based Seastreak Co. to operate the 149-passenger ferry Ocean State. The vessel can make the one-way run in one hour and has inside seating as well as open-air seating up top.
Ocean State will run between India Point Park in Providence and Perrotti Park in Newport four times daily on weekends, July 4 and Labor Day, and three times on weekdays.

Providence departures are at 10 a.m., 12:30 p.m., 5 p.m. and 9:45 p.m.
Newport departures are at 11:15 a.m., 1:45 p.m., 6:15 p.m. and 11 p.m.
The day’s last run returns to Providence at midnight.

First two runs are the same, and the day’s final run leaves Providence at 6 p.m. and departs Newport at 7:15 p.m.
Fares are $10 one way and $20 round trip for adults; $5 one way and $10 round trip for children, seniors and disabled passengers.
There is a bike rack.
