The Tiverton Planning Board on Tuesday voted to give a would-be crematorium developer more time to submit information pertaining to the controversial proposal planned for a vacant lot at 730 Main Road.

Sakonnet Partners LLC hopes to build the 2,960-square-foot crematorium and an adjacent chapel on Neighborhood Business-zoned land situated between a used car dealership and residential homes. The plan has drawn heavy criticism from neighbors, many of whom attended Tuesday's meeting at Tiverton High School. Originally planned for town hall, it was moved to accommodate an anticipated large turnout.

Tiverton Residents Against Crematorium, the group formed to  block the development, started an online fund-raising campaign last month to help with anticipated legal expenses. Within days of its formation, the group’s GoFundMe campaign had received more than $5,000 in donations, representing more than half of its $10,000 goal. In addition, more than 1,000 residents have signed a petition opposing the crematorium’s construction.

The LLC’s principal, Jonathan Ferreira, is a funeral director in Rhode Island and Massachusetts and one of the owners of a fifth-generation funeral home in Fall River.

The planning board's next meeting on the matter is scheduled for Tuesday, April 4.
