McLaughlin: Bike path a bad deal for Tiverton

Bike path/walking park? Sounds like something good for Tiverton? At first. Places like Newport businesses can benefit from the extra foot traffic. But in Tiverton it only passes through residents’ back yards invading their privacy!

The organizers of this idea could not tell me who was liable, Tiverton, or the state, for accidents on it. Anothertown is in court after someone was killed on their bike path.

Tiverton would be responsible for maintenance of the path at taxpayer expense, something we can't afford. Especially considering it would in no way benefit the town as it doesn't go by local businesses.

The issues already with people using the train tracks to rob North Tiverton residents so making it more accessible allowing them to bring a shopping cart instead of just what they can carry seems crazy.

It would allow strangers in the back yards of Tiverton residents. While statistics show crime does go down in commercial areas with bike paths it increases in more remote residential areas.

While the concept sounds good, it’s not for Tiverton. The people developing this act like it's a gift to us. The Reality? Putting a ribbon on a dog poop don't make it a present!
