TIVERTON — She’s only a junior and her high school basketball career is far from over, but Tiverton’s Mariah Ramos scored her 1,000th point  ast Friday evening in a 60-56 road victory against Shea. 

Going into the game, Mariah had scored 991 points — the drama had been prolonged by the fact that she missed last Tuesday’s game due to a field trip to Washington, DC. On Friday, she reached that milestone and then some.

The thousandth point came on a three-pointer early on in the first half. The referees allowed the game to pause briefly for a quick photo with family members and Senator Walter Felag.

But then the Shea coach called Mariah to center court with both teams circled around her and presented her with a plaque, balloons and candy.

“It was truly a class act,” said Mariah’s mother, Cathy Ramos.

“Hitting my 1000 point shot was ultimately thrilling,” Mariah said later. “I never expected it to come entering high school let alone my junior year. My friends, family, and teammates were all right beside me from the moment I stepped on the varsity court my freshman year to that exact moment I hit the shot. All in all, it was a and incredible feeling to finally be able to hit that milestone.” 

Mariah scored 19 points in the game, pulled down 10 rebounds and had eight steals as the Tigers led early and then won in overtime over Shea and their star, Yasmine Santos, who hit for 30 and 18 rebounds.
