Little Compton volunteers launch grocery Buddy System

Posted

LITTLE COMPTON — Those who are worried about grocery shopping or unable to get to the grocery store now have buddies in Little Compton.

The Democratic Town Committee this week announced a coronavirus Buddy System to assist those for whom grocery shopping has become a serious concern or difficulty.

“Together with many of the civic and religious groups in town, we are working hard to make sure all Little Compton residents are able to meet their food needs during the pandemic, said Glenn Diana Sherman, committee chairwoman.

“We have a half-dozen young folks who have volunteered to help. We know it is much easier to give someone else your shopping list when they are heading to the store than ask for help.  Therefore, we are launching a Buddy System to pair these volunteers with anyone in town who does not feel safe getting their groceries or running errands.”

Those interested in connecting with a “Buddy” can do so by emailing info@littlecomptondems.org

“We will match you with a single volunteer who will contact you to make arrangements,” Ms. Sherman said. “They can pick you up supplies and drop them off at your house.  Since this Buddy System is informal and temporary, we will leave it to you and your Buddy to arrange deliveries, repayment, etc.”

In a statement announcing the project, the committee said, “In this uncertain time of COVID-19, we are filled with emotions. We feel fear and sadness. We are grateful for the healthcare workers, farmers, fishers, caregivers, grocery workers, delivery people, teachers, custodial staff, and small business owners who are stretching their means to keep us all safe, fed, and cared for. At this time, the importance of community is so clear, and we can see how our public health and safety is truly a shared responsibility … Please let us help you stay safe and provisioned.”
