Letter: Reject ‘spot zoning’ amendment in Little Compton

Posted

I strongly oppose the proposed amendment to Chapter XIV of the Little Compton Town Code Zoning Ordinance (14-6.1 Agricultural Overlay District) on the grounds that it unfairly confers on one specific farm/business a special right and privilege that is not enjoyed by other farms/businesses.

Were it to be passed, the amendment might well face challenges in the courts. It would also set a precedent that others might use to circumvent the zoning process.

This kind of spot zoning, a special and exclusive privilege or legal carve-out for one individual farm/business, at the expense of the rights of others, is inequitable and is contrary to the spirit and intent of our laws. The proposed amendment should therefore be denied.

I urge people to attend the public hearing on August 10 at 7 p.m. at our school to express their views.
