To the editor:
As a resident of Riverside Drive, I want to give a big shout out to the Tiverton Waste Water District (TWWD).
In the last few weeks, TWWD started two projects to bring sewers to Riverside Drive and to the Robert Grey subdivision. Through persistence and determination the staff and volunteers at TWWD overcame several years of financial, bureaucratic, and political obstacles.
As a result of their efforts, pollution from over 180 homes and their septic systems will no longer find its way into the Bay. We will all have a cleaner Sakonnet River, Mt Hope Bay, and Stonebridge basin.
While the Town of Tiverton and all its citizens will benefit from a cleaner and safer environment, no local tax dollars were involved in the project. TWWD funded the projects with an $8.5 million grant and loan from the U.S. Dept of Agriculture, backed by long term financial commitments by property owners (about $18,000 each).
We should all be thankful that Tiverton has stepped up to solve a problem that affects everyone around the bay.
Let’s hope that other communities with polluting septic systems along their shores step forward and make progress.
