Fire kills lone occupant of Tiverton house

Monday evening blaze destroys large residence

TIVERTON — One person, believed to be home alone at the time, is dead after an early evening fire tore through a large home at 197 Church Pond Drive Monday.

Acting Fire Chief Bruce Remiels said that flames engulfed the house shortly after 5 pm. The first firefighters to arrive found heavy smoke and flames already coming from the roof — they learned that one person was thought to be inside.

Crews went into the house and were able to locate the occupant. That person was transported to Saint Anne’s Hospital in Fall River at around 5:40 pm but did not survive.

Thereafter, firefighters were directed to fight the blaze from the outside, assisted by crews from Portsmouth, Little Compton and other nearby towns.

The cause of the fire has not yet been announced.

At the same time that the Tiverton Fire Department was battling this blaze, another alarm sounded at Sakonnet Bay Manor — smoke in three of the senior complex’s elevators and one person possibly trapped. Portsmouth crews assisted on that call. No injuries are reported there.
