Westport Board of Health wins watershed award

The Westport River Watershed Alliance has presented its 2023 Environmental Award To The Town of Westport's Board of Health.

The alliance chose the Board of Health for this year's award in recognition of its leadership in the development of new septic regulations, specific to new construction, which will reduce the impact of new nitrogen pollution loads in the Westport River.

WRWA members commended the board for developing and implementing regulations to limit the amount of nitrogen entering the river, which can restore and protect water quality and habitat.

"We applaud the Board of Health for considering both short term and long-term goals with the eventual result that nitrogen overloads from future growth and nitrogen from existing sources must be reduced."
