A Warren man has been sentenced to five months at the ACI in Cranston after pleading no contest last week to beating his dog and then his girlfriend, who stepped in to intervene.
Jmaire Wray, 19, was picked up by East Providence police last Tuesday, Oct. 16 on a Warren warrant following the incident, which occurred at his 6 Union St. apartment on Thursday, Oct. 11. Deputy Warren Police Chief Roy Borges said a person in the home at the time called police to report a domestic situation, and police who investigated learned that the assault began after Mr. Wray became angry that his young pitfall Sav had wet the carpet.
According to Deputy Chief Borges, Mr. Wray began whipping the dog with a belt after discovering the soiled rug. Mr. Wray’s girlfriend then intervened, at which point Mr. Wray started throwing items around the apartment, grabbed her twice by the neck, threw her to the ground, and ripped a bedroom door from its hinges. The dog suffered welts and marks on its back, chest and frontal area.
Mr. Wray was arraigned Wednesday, Oct. 17 in Sixth Division District Court in Providence, where he pleaded no contest to one charge each of domestic assault, domestic vandalism and cruelty to animals. A disorderly conduct charge was dropped. Mr. Wray was given a one-year suspended sentence, ordered to serve five months at the ACI, was put on five years’ probation and was ordered to relinquish custody of his dog. Deputy Chief Borges said Mr. Wray’s girlfriend claimed the animal.
