PORTSMOUTH — Portsmouth High School is the third-best high school in the state, according to U.S. News & World Report’s latest rankings.
The school earned the media company’s Silver Medal in its annual rankings, which placed the school at No. 591 nationally.
U.S. News ranked Classical High School in Providence as the state’s top school, followed by Barrington High at No. 2.
Schools are ranked based on their performance on state-required tests and how well they prepare students for college.
In its report, the U.S. News noted Portsmouth High’s graduation rate of 97 percent and students’ high participation rate in advanced placement (AP) classes. According to the report, 60 percent of students participate in AP classes, with 85 percent of them passing those courses.
According to the report, 33 percent of PHS students were rated proficient in mathematics, and 55 percent proficient in English.
PHS has a total enrollment of 919 students, with a 12:1 student-teacher ratio, according to the report. The student body makeup is 48 percent male and 52 percent female, and the total minority enrollment is 8 percent, the report stated.
