Speakman beats Hunt in District 68 representative race

In a race heavily impacted by mail-in ballots, incumbent Democrat June Speakman of Warren defeated Libertarian challenger William "Billy" Hunt for the House of Representatives District 68 seat Tuesday.

With all precincts reporting and mail and in-person early ballots counted, Ms. Speakman took 3,943, or nearly 60 percent, of the vote.

Mr. Hunt finished with 2,626 votes.
The district, which Rep. Speakman won following the departure of would-be legislator Laufton Ascencao at the end of 2018, lies partly in Warren and Bristol. Prior to the addition of mail ballots early

Wednesday morning, Mr. Hunt held a slight lead. But the early ballots changed the race.
Percentage-wise, Ms. Speakman, a Warren resident, fared better in her home town than in Bristol. She carried about 58 percent of the vote in Bristol vs. 66 percent in Warren.
