School committee candidates clock in on speed cameras

Barrington School Committee Question of the week

Posted

Question: Are you in favor of placing speed cameras in school zones across Barrington?

Sarah Whiting — Democrat:

Not at this time. With school construction changing traffic and walking routes, my priority is clear, accessible crosswalks, crossing guards where needed, speed feedback signs, and safe arrival and dismissal plans. Speed cameras can reduce speeding, but we should first identify the specific risks at each school and address them directly. I would consider cameras where local data shows they would meaningfully improve safety.

Adam Stearnbourne — Democrat:

After speaking with crossing guards and seeing speeding myself while dropping off my daughter, I am in favor of speed cameras in our school zones, with specific safeguards. The data should not be shared with outside agencies without a court order, and any fines should be equitable, serving as a deterrent without an outsized impact on residents. The town should also report whether the cameras actually slow drivers down.
