PROVIDENCE — The Rhode Island Department of Health announced late Monday night, March 2, it would not have a result on the specimens for the staff member from Achievement First Academy being tested for coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), which were originally expected for the same evening.
According to RIDOH Public Information Officer Joseph Wendelken, the timeframe has changed to Tuesday, March 3. Achievement First Academy Hartford (Providence) and Garfield (Cranston) campuses will still be closed Tuesday as they were Monday.
The Achievement Academy employee was a chaperone on a European trip with mostly St. Raphael Academy students and personnel during February vacation.
Another chaperone, a man in his 40s who works as SRA, became the first presumptive case of COVID-19 in the state. He did not return to school upon coming home from the trip 10 days ago and has been hospitalized since last week where he is still undergoing treatment. The man's family, including an East Providence School District employee, entered quarantine upon his admittance to hospital.
A student on the trip was next diagnosed as the presumptive second COVID-19 case. She has been in self-quarantine since coming down with symptoms and leaving school Thursday, Feb. 27. Some 40 people on the trip are being monitored by RIDOH.
Extensive contact tracing has been done regarding the student. RIDOH has identified the vast majority of the people with whom this student had prolonged face-to-face contact. Those people are at home self-quarantining.
